Importance of Spoken English |
Importance of Spoken English English has come to occupy a very important place in the present era of globalisation and liberalisation. With the entry of multinational companies into our country, English, in its new avatar, known as Spoken English, has become the maker or destroyer of one’s future. Without its knowledge, one cannot rise in one’s career since English communication skill plays an important role in professional, academic, social and political fields.
Special Effort
Since English is a foreign language, students in India have to make a special effort to learn it to speak fluently and correctly. No doubt, there are also lucky ones who have the advantage of having born in English-speaking families and they learn to speak it better due to English-speaking environment at home. But majority of students in our country do not have this advantage and have to learn Spoken as well as Written English from books and with their own efforts.
But during my 25 years’ experience as a journalist, I have found that if one is good in Spoken English he is weak in Written English. Similarly, if someone is good in Written English he may not be good in Spoken English and may not be able to speak even a sentence correctly and fluently.
It is a fact that our text books do not teach the art of Spoken English in an effective way. So even if one completes Bachelor’s or Master’s degrees, he feels that he can’t speak even a sentence frequently and correctly when it comes to talking in English.
The proof of this fact is the running of the so-called Spoken English institutes in towns and cities which are charging thousands of Rupees and claim to teach Spoken English in just 30 days! Is it possible? I think learning English is a continuous process.
